At Thor’s Hammer we do our best to minimise waste. While our whole business is built around salvaging ‘waste’ timber from demolition sites, we’re also also all about minimising the waste produced in our workshop, through our timber recycling and dressing operations, and our furniture and joinery workshop. The two main products we repurpose our waste into are our recycled sawdust fire briquettes, and our firewood offcuts.

Fire Briquettes

We turn our waste recycled hardwood sawdust from furniture production into highly efficient, clean burning, fire briquettes for use in your wood heater.

We collect the dust from all the machines in our workshop via a complex dust extraction system, feeding it all into our RUF Briquetting Press from Germany. This machine then compresses the sawdust by using immense hydraulic pressure, resulting in a high density product with a very low moisture content (10 - 12%). The natural lignins in the timber bind the briquettes together. It’s one of our many sustainability initiatives here at Thor's—all to reduce our impact on the environment.

Why Use Fire Briquettes?

Our fire briquettes have no glue, no additives, just pure recycled hardwood sawdust. Just a clean burning, cost efficient, environmentally friendly heat source for your home.

  • Use less fuel to heat your home, get a hotter fire with less ash and creosote build up in your flue. The smaller particles and lower moisture content of briquettes compared to firewood - means you will burn less fuel and create more heat using super dense and dry fire briquettes.

The moisture content of commercially available firewood commonly ranges from 20 - 30%, our fire briquettes are 12% moisture content or below - meaning you’re paying for more fuel, and less water. And the super dry briquettes light and burn more easily.

Fire briquettes are hugely popular in Europe for their convenience, efficiency and sustainability. Read what The Guardian has to say about the benefits and popularity of fire bricks here.

  • No more firewood deliveries dumped in your driveway left for you to stack, no more axe.

Our fire briquettes are delivered on a 1 ton or half ton pallet, and they can be delivered into your carport or garage* in Canberra, ready to throw on your fire. Or for the occasional fire buy a sample box of 12-14.

*Delivery has clearance and gradient restrictions, more details on the order form.

  • Made from sawdust from a recycled timber mill with no glue or additives. The density and low moisture content mean significantly reduced smoke emissions from your wood stove while at the same time saving forests and animal habitat. Reduce your carbon footprint with a wood stove and fire briquettes.

A Note on Our Waitlist

We make 2-3 briquette pallets per week. Sometimes that’s plenty to keep up with demand, and sometimes it’s not. Spring and summer are the best months to place an order as we receive far less orders when the weather is warmer.

If you wait to make an order until autumn or winter, there’s a good chance that we will be out of stock. If this is the case, you can sign up for updates via our online shop and we will notify you as soon as we have more stock available to purchase.

The waitlist duration can vary year to year, but if you give us a call on 02 6282 9900 we can let you know the expected wait time.

If you can’t wait, how about a Briquette Box?

Currently, we aren’t providing shipping for briquette boxes, but plan to provide this in the future so watch this space! To grab a box please visit our workshop and showroom and 10 Mildura Street, Griffith (Canberra) to pick up your briquette boxes.

We’re committed to keeping our transportation footprint as small as possible, so we really wanted to take our time to consider how to offer Australia-wide briquette shipping, while still encouraging local pickups whenever possible. If you’re outside of Canberra, it’s also worth asking around in your local area to see if there’s a briquette supplier closer to home—plenty of sawmills and timber businesses also provide waste sawdust briquettes.

Firewood

From the same quality dry recycled Australian hardwood we use to make our custom timber furniture and flooring. When we de-nail our recycled timbers we have rejects and off cuts which don’t make the grade. These are docked to lengths from 150mm to 350mm long and stacked neatly on a pallet. The timber is very dry and burns really well. Perfect to keep you warm through the winter!

For easy pick up, we can load the pallet with our forklift as long as your trailer or vehicle can fit 1200mm wide.
